Steps to applying, auditioning and winning
scholarships to a school of music
1. Determine what area of music you think you would most
enjoy. Find the schools that fit your criteria. What kind of
school do you desire. A large school where you will be one
of many or do you desire a small school environment where you will
be known by most all teachers and students.
Not sure music is right for you?
Look at all the possibilities from Berklee College of music:
2. Immediately start the application process for both
the University and the School of Music. Schools cannot offer
scholarships to students who don't have a completed application in
for the University. For Texas state schools considering using the
Texas Common Application.
This application saves you time when applying for more than one
school.
3. Talk with your parents about your decisions and
decide on audition dates for your schools of choice. Many
schools offer auditions on the same days. It will be important
that you take that into consideration if you are applying for more
than one school. Prepare for your auditions carefully-for detailed
information click here (coming soon). Read each website carefully
and use all of the resources available to you. Many schools list
what music they would like for you to play and what there
expectations are. Then study the following articles to find
the tips and tricks of auditioning well:
4. It is imperative that you file for Federal Financial
Aid. Practically every university in the U.S. uses this form
as their way of gather your financial information. You might
qualify for Federal Assistance (Grants, Work Study or Loans),
State Aid (Normally Loans) or university based assistance.
To fill out this form both your parents and your need to apply for
a Government PIN. You can do this now at
www.pin.ed.gov Make your
parents aware that they need to do their taxes as early as
possible in 2007. This will allow you to fill out the FAFSA
(Government form for aid) early! Most colleges hand out
financial aid on a first come first serve basis. You want
your paperwork finalized early to have the most options.
When they have their taxes completed go to
www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete
the application.
5. Keep your grades up and make sure you fill out
every piece of information that each school asks you for. One
missing piece of paper will hold up the entire process. If your
not sure call the admissions department and ask them what else you
might need.
