The band program, directed by Evaristo Rodriguez, currently
includes 130 students and four performing ensembles.
Mr. Rodriguez is currently serving his first year as the
Head Band Director and is assisted by the Orchestra Director,
Mrs. Koran. Students in the band program regularly achieve
outstanding results at local and state level competitions.
Students compete at TMEA
Region, Area and State Auditions, as well as UIL Solo
and Ensemble and Concert and Sightreading Contests.
The band was selected as the Staten Island Music Festival
Grand Champion in May of 2007.
Due to our schools focus on self-guided academics and fine arts, Kerr
High School does not offer marching band or any organized UIL athletic
teams.
Wind Ensemble- This ensemble allows students who show exceptional musical
achievement and/or are considering music as a career to fine tune their
skills in a challenging environment. Students in this class have solid fundamentals on
their instrument and can perform many styles of literature at an extremely
high level of performance. This group competes at all UIL Concert and
Sightreading contests and consistently earns Excellent and Superior Ratings. The Kerr
Wind Ensemble is the only band in Alief ISD to earn a Sweepstakes Concert Band award
in the last 10 years.
Symphonic Band- This ensemble allows students who enjoy participating in
music to enjoy music on a daily basis. This group regularly performs
throughout the year and recently competed at its first UIL Concert and
Sightreading contest. This ensemble has grown from 13 members five
years ago to almost 60 members!
